Synthroid is an effective tablet that is given for treating hypothyroidism. The drug is also given for goiter that has been developed by cancer, hormone imbalances, radiation treatment or surgery.

How taken

While taking Synthroid, strictly follow the doctor's prescription. The drug has to be taken in the morning in empty stomach, about 30 minutes before eating anything. The drug should have to be taken with full glass of water. Some times you may come across choking in throat as the drug dissolves very quickly.

Synthroid should be taken as long as your doctor has advised. Never stop the drug after you feel some improvement in your condition as it can only lead to more complications. Moreover, the drug may take a few weeks for improving your conditions. The drug should only be stopped in consultation with your doctor.

Missed dose/overdose

Never deviate from your prescribed doses. Always take Synthroid tablet at the scheduled time. If any dose is missed, you can take that dose once you remember it. But in case you do not remember it till your next dose, skip the missed one. Never mix any two doses of Synthroid as it can only increase the risk of side effects.

An overdose of Synthroid is not healthy. If you think of having taken an overdose, better contact the doctor soon. Some of the Synthroid overdose symptoms include tremor, shortness of breath, chest pain, fast heartbeat, confusion, vomiting, seizures, diarrhoea and leg cramps.

The doctor will only be able to prescribe the right prescription after he is aware of your overall condition. The physician should have an idea about all your allergic reactions and also all the problems that you are having.

Tell the doctor if you are allergic to any particular medicine, food or any substance including the ingredients of Synthroid. Let the doctor know if you have diabetes, coronary artery or heart diseases, anaemia, pituitary/ adrenal gland problems and history of blood clots.

As Synthroid is FDA pregnancy category A, the drug can be used by pregnant women and breast-feeding women. The drug will not cause any harm to the unborn or newborn babes. Even then, it is better to inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. The doctor may sometimes prescribe a higher dose during these periods.

While you are on Synthroid medication, the liver, kidney and heart conditions should have to be regularly monitored. Therefore, never miss any appointments or lab tests.

Side effects

All drugs come with side effects and allergic reactions; Synthroid is also not an exception. Some of the allergic reactions noticed with Synthroid include berating difficulty, hives and swelling (throat, ace, mouth, lips). If you experience any of these allergic reactions, contact the doctor immediately.

Stop Synthroid and call your doctor immediately if you have any serious side effects like fever, sweating, headache, insomnia, hot flashes, irritable feeling, menstrual period changes, and weight changes.
